During the time the Short Hills train station was built, there were no plans of installing lighting fixtures in the area. This is evident because before the city reached out to SOLTECH, there were no preexisting poles on the property. The city didn’t know if they wanted a solar or on-grid lighting solution.
When adding on-grid lighting to an area that previously did not have any, there are sure to be many unavoidable obstacles. In contrast to solar lighting, On-grid lighting includes much more than just mounting the fixtures onto a pole. Below are some of the extra costs associated when installing tradition lighting fixtures,
· Trenching costs
· Wiring costs
· Annual electricity costs
In other words, for this specific project, an on-grid lighting solution was not optimal. On the other hand, due to the simple installation and cheaper installation costs, a solar lighting solution was more optimal.
